|Everton legend Kevin Ratcliffe sees a major rebuilding job needed at Goodison Park
Whoever succeeds maxbet Sam Allardyce at Everton has a significant rebuilding job on his hands.
But the priority has to be building a new spine of the team.
With the exception of the goalkeeper, Everton need new faces right down the middle of the team.
Jordan Pickford has had an impressive debut season at Everton and is still young, still learning.
He will still make mistakes, like he did at West Ham on the last day of the season, but he has showed plenty of promise.
Hopefully he will come back after a good World Cup, after playing plenty of games, and continue the form he has already showed.
But in front of him we need a new centre-half, a centre midfielder and a striker.
That’s the entire spine of the side.
We’ve had part of a spine this season but nothing consistent, and we need to address that definitely.
Quite who addresses that situation remains to be seen.
I don’t know a great deal about the new Director of Football, Marcel Brands, but he has to work with the next manager so you would imagine he will have endorsed the identity of the man Everton have targeted.
Because signing players has to be a collective decision, with everyone in agreement.
The manager has to see the players we’re going to sign as well as the Director of Football.
You can’t just go on one man’s opinion.
The assistant has to see him, the chief scout and the manager several times.
And when you’re buying from abroad you have to do a lot of digging about players’ maxbet backgrounds. You don’t want to buy the wrong sort and we have bought too many of the ‘wrong sort’ in recent seasons.
The manager picks the side, the manager coaches the side, and the manager takes the hit at the end of the day.
So while the Director of Football may identify potential targets, the manager has to be happy with those signings too. maxbet
